East Coast Road Trip: Acadia National Park, ME

July 28, 2010 by Caroline 5 Comments

The only sand beach at Acadia National Park

There is a reason this blog is called Caroline in the City. I don’t do so hot with nature. Consult “Caroline in the Country” if you don’t remember. So was I thrilled to find out we would wake up at 4 a.m. to watch the sun rise? Not so much.

To me 4 a.m. is still night, not morning. And as you may have guessed, I am not a morning person. But this view was worth it. So we made the drive to Cadillac Mountain to join the other faithfuls huddled in blankets.

Thunder Hole…sounds like something it isn’t

So I got to go back to sleep. But later, we walked through Otter Cliff and Thunder Hole and other bizarrely named areas of Acadia. Someone on the National Parks board has a real sense of humor.

View of the Sand Beach from Gorham Point

Since my sister Sammi had to “suffer” (although I would hardly call it that, since she enjoyed it) through the art museum in Boston, she got to take us on a two mile hike. I knew I was out of shape already, and proved it to myself after walking the 792 stairs of the City Walls in Dubrovnik.

I survived the hike to Gorham Point and was met with beautiful views. But don’t expect me to go on any more hikes for a while.

While you’re at it, check out my guest post on GoBackpacking about getting dumped by backpacking friends.

Gorgeous pics!!! I'm soooo not a morning person. 4AM is when I go to sleep, NOT wake up! But, it looks like it was definitely worth it.

I am a morning person and even I almost didn’t get up for Cadillac Mountain when we had to do it twice! The first time there was too much fog and there was nothing to see so we had to do it again. For me, it isn’t getting up for the sunrise – it is the extra hour that you need to add to make sure you get there and get a parking spot. Fortunately, it was totally worth it.
