It definitely was a nice hostel, which is why I picked that one in the first place, but I never got to experience it. It made the worst list because of the management’s handling of the flooding. The amenities, had I been able to enjoy them, probably would have counteracted the unorganized staff. Thanks for commenting! Wish I could have gotten free champagne!

You put Base St Kilda on your “worst” list but it doesn’t sound too bad the way you described it. I actually stayed there for a little over a week when I was in Melbourne and I liked it. I stayed in the female sanctuary dorms, and it was pretty good. I’m not one to party every night, so the crappy bar downstairs didn’t interest me (though I did go down for free champagne once) but the female dorms were far enough away on the 3rd floor that I couldn’t really hear the music, so that was good. Good round-up of hostels :-)

Caroline – I must admit that I also found all the sex a bit offputting and I certainly wouldn’t have been very happy to be one of those girls that he kissed and said goodbye to and then found my name in print, although I’m not sure if the names were changed.
