I have lived in Charleston for almost four years and in that time, I have done little exploration of the barrier islands. There is a lot of amazing stuff to see out of town, especially to those nature-y people like my sister. Take US-17 South (Savannah Highway) out of town and follow the signs. You will take a left onto Highway 162 which intersects with Highway 174.
The King’s Farmer’s Market has all sorts of goodies that would make an excellent island picnic: bread, vegetables, fruits, jams, jellies, wines, Cheerwine, and more. Pick up some goods and head out to the beach.

The object behind me may look like some pile of crap in the marsh that people have tossed over the years, but it is known as the Edisto Mystery Tree. For more information, consult Roadside America.
The Edisto Island Serpentarium is one of only a handful of attractions on the island. It was a little pricey for a room filled with local snakes in fish tanks, but I did get some sweet postcards from the gift shop.
The Old Post Office Restaurant is just how it sounds: a restaurant created from the island’s original post office.
The Presbyterian Church On Edisto has a prayer chapel that visitors can go to.
I think this church is absolutely beautiful.
So the next Saturday you are in the area, get out and explore one of the islands. For more of my pictures, go here.
