The bus stops here are so cute.
I first have to point out that I love the color green and any holiday that I can wear as much of it as possible. I’ve lived near Savannah for almost 4 years but this was the first time I got to go for the biggest party of the year, St. Patrick’s Day. Enough said.
Paula Deen, y’all. There was a line around the block.
Elizabeth and I drove from St. Simon’s to Savannah Saturday morning after getting a quick bite at Sweet Mama’s. Parking was more of an issue than we had anticipated, but Siz’s iPhone came in handy.
Savannah St. Pat’s Tip #1: Find parking in advance or stay in a hotel near River Street with its own parking.
River Street
We started out at Wet Willie’s and in efforts of getting the most bang for my limited bucks, I got an $8 Call-A-Cab.
Savannah St. Pat’s Tip #2: In the words of Mrs. Levy, “Avoid red drinks.” This is especially true when you are at an all-day drinking event.
We took our time on these drinks before walking around. We went towards the west end of town and picked up some more green goods including Renaissance fest type tiaras and beads.
Green beer at One-Eyed Lizzy’s.
We picked up some (expensive) green beers at One Eyed Lizzy’s and took them to go. Oh yeah and in case you haven’t been there, Savannah has no open container laws, meaning if you don’t finish that drink in time for last call, you can take it with you for the walk/stumble home.
Savannah St. Pat’s Tip #3: Yes you can drink on the street, but don’t be stupid. You can still get arrested for driving drunk, public urination and disorderly conduct. Don’t take the limits of the law too far.
This shirt was everywhere.
Eventually we realized we needed food. We went to Moon River Brewing Company for a very late lunch. I had a great barbecue sandwich and a Savannah Fest beer. At some point, we went to a bar on the east side of River Street called Chuck’s that turned out to be a gay bar. Who knew. I realized there were a bunch of men there but it didn’t hit me until Siz pointed it out.
I don’t know about the cheapest beer in town, but the bouncer was hating on Charleston.
We also stopped in here for a “cheap” beer. Nothing was really cheap here.
Savannah St. Pat’s Tip #4: Cash is essential. Yes there are some places that take debit cards, but it’s much easier to operate on a cash basis.
Free cup!
I got one beer at Olympia Cafe because I really wanted the free cup. We did some shopping (okay, Siz did some shopping…) before hitting up Tubby’s. And finally, we went by Spanky’s for a sort of dinner of nachos. Did I leave any out? It was a crazy long day, so then we went home.
Savannah St. Pat’s Tip #5: Have fun. Enjoy the tackiness. Meet weird people. It’s St. Patrick’s Day, after all. And DON’T get a tattoo after having 7+ drinks.
Christine says
did siz get a tattoo?
