I’m not much of a sweet tooth as I’m more of a savory person, but with a cupcake fanatic for a best friend, I knew we would have our share of desserts on our trip to San Francisco. Before we even landed, she had mapped out the city’s best cupcakes on her iPhone.
San Francisco’s Best Sweets
Beignets from Brenda’s French Soul Food
On our first morning in town, Scotti and I met up with Hannah, a friend of hers from high school, who has been living in San Francisco for the last few years. As a fellow Georgia girl, she’s found the few places that do Southern food right on the West Coast.
Brenda’s French Soul Food is known for its New Orleans-influenced cuisine. In addition to ordering our breakfasts, we shared the beignet platter, which came with four samples: plain, Ghiradelli chocolate, baked apple and crawfish. Each was so delicious that I didn’t know if I would have room for the rest of my breakfast.
Miette Cupcakes
Located in the culinary wonderland known as the Ferry Building, Miette is decorated 50s-inspired pastels. The cupcakes come in fantastic flavors like gingerbread, but more than that, they have cakes, pots de creme, cookies and all sorts of candies. When you take them to go, they come in Chinese food boxes!
Tcho New American Chocolate
The new kid on the chocolate block has a Willy Wonka-style factory in a refurbished pier building. Tcho has hip designs and tasty blends of chocolate win over locals and tourists alike. They offer tours and tastings, as well as a coffee shop.
Kara’s Cupcakes
With a few locations in town, Kara’s Cupcakes even has a mobile “Karavan,” where she sells her cupcakes with designs like the Giants logo and items for every occasion. The Food Network featured chef even makes gluten free options.
Ghiradelli Ice Cream
What trip to San Francisco would be complete without the king of sweets, Ghiradelli Square? You can buy any type of chocolate bar, milk, white or dark, stuffed with caramel, or chocolate coffee drinks, milkshakes or even their famous ice cream sundaes.
