On the outskirts of Kolekole and Akaka Falls state parks is the town of Honomu, Hawaii. It looks like it could be straight out of the Wild West and transported onto a tropical island. On my trip to Hawaii last June, my sisters, mother and I stumbled upon this magical town.
On the main street there are a dozen stores and three churches, one for each different branch of Christianity.
The buildings are painted in tropical colors that reminded me of Rainbow Row in Charleston.
Honomu is a sleepy surfer town worth visiting if you’re driving around in search for waterfalls, as we were on this particular day.
We visited Mr. Ed’s Bakery to pick up the necessary items to cool off: cans of Coke, passionfruit shave ice (the best we had the whole trip!) and snickerdoodle cookies.
At the antique store next door, the owner had hundreds upon hundreds of bottles. Old Primo beer bottles, medicine bottles and some of mysterious origin.
I bought myself a shell necklace from one of the boutiques to get myself into the island spirit.
Visiting Honomu
Located on the Big Island, the closest major airport is in Hilo, a 20 minute drive. It’s best to take a day trip from Hilo.

You can guarantee a comment from me anytime anyone mentions the Big Island. I just love it there! Love all the random small towns that most people drive through. So super cute!

Thanks for the comments ladies! Yeah this particular town really caught my eye although there are dozens just like it throughout the islands.
