While Melbourne didn’t get a chance to impress me, I did appreciate the street art that makes the city so popular with the hip, artsy set. I had read about the so-called “graffiti alley,” better known as Hosier Lane, before visiting Melbourne but knew I had to track it down for myself.
Located across from landmarks Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, Hosier Lane is a constantly evolving work of living art. Just type “graffiti alley Melbourne” into Google to see what I mean. You could visit two days in a row and see completely different things.
The lane is also home to hip restaurants and bars. You might even catch someone painting while you’re there, but I didn’t.
The Living Wall, pictured above, provides medical services to homeless in the area. It may look like just another derelict building overtaken by colorful spray paint, but it serves an important purpose in the community.
It’s been two years now since I was in Melbourne and I still think about my visit, about how I should have given it a real chance. I’m just now writing down my feelings about much of my Australian adventure. But hopefully, I will have a chance to revisit Melbourne one day soon.

Graffiti alley is impressive! I’ve never been in Melbourne. Would love to go!
Do you know any places like that in Atlanta, besides Krog Street tunnel?

I love love love the street art in Melbourne. It’s a shame the city didn’t woo you :( It was like that for me on my first visit, but I returned for a job and ended up loving it.

I’ve heard so many good things about Melbourne’s street art. I’m probably moving there in June, so I’m excited to see it firsthand! That would also probably be an ideal time for you to come visit again….

Sorry to hear that Melbourne didn’t impress you, I love the place.
Very interesting to see your pictures and the timing couldn’t be better! I was in Melbourne in December 2012 and wrote a post about the Melbourne Street art. I took numerous pictures from Hosiery Lane and a few other streets.
Interesting to contrast the pictures to see how they’ve changed. You can see my post here http://flightsandfrustration.com/the-magic-of-melbourne-street-art/
Loving your blog Caroline.
