The familiar skyline of Buckhead greeted me from the window of my room at The Westin Buckhead Atlanta. I was doing a “staycation” of sorts, spending a night at the hotel between two days working downtown, in order to learn more about the major renovations it had undergone recently.
I’ve lived in Atlanta for most of my life and had never once entered the hotel, despite running past it every year during the Peachtree Road Race and writing a Westin Finds by AFAR guide for the property.
I was joined by a group of fellow writers for what would become a girls night in, spent sipping champagne, munching on cookies and watching The Other Woman in our pajamas in the Presidential Suite. It was great to not only get to see the suite, which has a jacuzzi bathtub overlooking the area, but to meet other writers and talk shop for a few hours. I could picture myself as a celebrity throwing a bash in the suite.
After a tour of the hotel and plenty of champagne, it was time to climb into my Heavenly bed in my standard room. My alarm was set for 6 am, as I had signed up for a guided run with a few writers and hotel employees. I was cursing that last glass, but I laced up my borrowed tennis shoes, part of their New Balance gear lending program, and set out.
The sun wasn’t yet up and I was in an unfamiliar side street, trying my best to keep up with the girls who were in better shape than I. But following the 3 mile run, which you can do on your own with a map from the front desk, I was glad I’d done it.
So I celebrated my morning with a much-needed shower and a full breakfast at the Executive Lounge, including a strong cup of English Breakfast Tea, cereal, eggs, bacon and fruit. The great night’s sleep, morning run and full breakfast set me up for a great day at work.
Have you ever had a “staycation” in your own town?

Yes all you have to do is ask at the desk! They’ve got shoes and clothing. This hotel also had a map of nearby running paths.
