Photo Friday: Savannah, Georgia

Despite living less than 5 hours from the coastal city, I’ve only been to Savannah, Georgia a handful of times. I rarely had the need when I lived in Charleston, as we had a beach of our own, but went on a few day trips. But since I launched This Is My South, I knew it was time to give the rival city another chance.

My visit fell in line with the Savannah Food and Wine Festival and following three weeks of nonstop travel to Kentucky and Malaysia. It was set in stone for many months, but when it came time to actually go, I was tired and not looking forward to the drive. Thankfully, Savannah is so charming that I soon forgot about it.

My long weekend was spent on a free walking tour and a food tour, eating up all the most delicious things the city has to offer, like the honey pecan crispy fried chicken from The Pirates House or the secret sauce of the Conquistador sandwich from Zunzi’s Take Out. If I knew one thing about visiting Savannah, it was that I wouldn’t go hungry or want for anything.

The majestic oaks line every square, most covered in Spanish moss, which is an air plant, rather than the oft mistaken parasite. The bricks and cobblestones are some of the oldest aspects of the city, each stamped with the place they were made.

You’re surrounded by history at every turn. I wandered the homes of some of Savannah’s first and most notable residents, like Juliette Gordon Low and Flannery O’Connor.

And you can’t walk through Savannah without seeing a landmark from a movie, like the church pictured above that was featured in Forrest Gump. At it’s core, Savannah is an artsy college town, home to Armstrong Atlantic University and Savannah College of Art and Design. This means you’ll see plenty of man buns and skateboards, as well as deals on cheap but tasty food.

No matter how much time I spend in Savannah, I always feel like I’ve hardly scratched the surface, but I’m always glad to visit.
