My four years living in Charleston meant I never went to any other beaches. And why would I? I could be laying on the white sand of Sullivan’s Island within fifteen minutes of leaving my house. So I missed out on trips to South Carolina’s other beaches like Hilton Head Island. The family friendly island is popular with golfers, as resorts with courses cover the majority of the island.
I’d already planned a trip to Savannah to cover a few things for This Is My South, so when I spoke with someone from the Omni Hilton Head Resort, I decided I should add a few nights on to the beginning to see the island. Considering it was November and not remotely beach weather, the island, and beach, were full of people. There seems to be no low season here in Hilton Head.
In terms of traditional things to do, there isn’t a list of popular choices. Most are activity based, whether it’s riding your bike around the entire island’s trails, golfing, playing tennis or swimming. Hilton Head is also located well for day trips to Daufuskie Island, Beaufort and Bluffton.
One thing Hilton Head excels in is its food scene. For such a small island, I didn’t really have a single bad meal. Some of my favorites included a catfish po boy at NEO Farm to Table Gastropub, paired with a local River Dog beer, and the shrimp and grits from Lucky Rooster Kitchen & Bar.
So if you’re looking for a family vacation or just a quiet weekend on your own, Hilton Head suited me very well. These sunsets alone made me want to stay for more than two nights.
Thanks to the Omni Hilton Head Resort for hosting me during my stay.
