It’s the experience that changed my life and the direction of this website. After college, I applied for countless newspaper jobs, only to end up waiting tables. I applied for a working holiday visa in Australia, where I spent a year bartending, traveling, and meeting new people. It’s an experience I would recommend for almost everyone as it gives you the opportunity to interact with people from all over the world while living like a local. I also was able to support myself and also save for travels around much of the country.
The most reader questions I get are all about my working holiday in Australia. Over the last six (!!!) years, I’ve advised dozens of people on their own working holidays and even met up with readers to talk about it. So I wanted to answer the frequently asked questions about the experience in one place as well as take the opportunity to answer directly about whatever comes up. So do you have a burning question about what it’s like to work and travel in Australia? Tune in on Monday, February 6 at 11 am EST to the Caroline in the City Facebook page.

Thank you for posting this video! My 18 year-old is moving to Australia on Tuesday and your info eases my heart a bit! He used a travel agency to get started, so his first 7 days are covered. They helped him set up his bank account already, and took care of his visa which costs a bit more, but worth it for us.
Sounds like he’s going to have the time of his life!
Hugs from San Antonio, TX.
