Despite what my friends and family think, I do actually spend a fair amount of time in my home city of Atlanta. It’s nice to have a base to crash in between travels and is where I do most of my self-care. It’s something that is important for the self employed because mental health is just as valuable as physical health.
Sometimes it means treating myself to a spa day and other days it’s a mask from the pharmacy. I’ve also thought about trying Priv. Have you tried any of these self care options in your city?
Hot tubbing at Jeju
One of my favorite places in the entire city is in the northern suburbs. Duluth is home to Jeju Sauna, a traditional Korean spa. The massive space includes saunas handmade with items like jade and other precious stones with different healing qualities.
They offer saunas and massages, but my favorite thing is the hot pools. Fair warning that they’re separated by gender because you get fully naked in them (with strangers). But once you get past that, it’s the best way to relax after a completed deadline.
Yoga and Turkish bath at Exhale
Exhale Atlanta is one of my favorite places for many reasons. Located in the Loews hotel, they offer birthday discounts on classes and treatments. Their fitness classes are on ClassPass, including yoga and barre. And after you sweat it out in class, you can treat yourself to spa amenities like their Turkish steam room. You get to use their cozy robes and shower off with their top of the line toiletries.
Pain-free hair removal at Sweet Peach
Okay, maybe not completely pain free, but Sweet Peach Wax & Sugaring Studio is the best place in Atlanta for hair removal. They have both wax and sugaring options that suit your skin needs. I have sensitive skin and have never had a problem. The professional ladies make you feel comfortable and play Sex in the City episodes in the background. They also sell bath products.
Dry Bar
Atlanta has dozens of blow dry bars, but Drybar Buckhead is the original. I am terrible at doing my own hair, so getting a blowout is perfect before a wedding, big night out, or for new headshots. They make their own products and treat you like you’re at a fancy salon, complete with champagne. Best of all, it’s under $50.
Digital detox at Mandarin
For a splurge, there’s nowhere better than The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, where you could easily spend the entire day. I recently opted for the digital detox package, which is perfect for someone like me that spends the day slumped over a computer. It includes a massage and time to unwind with adult coloring books. You can also take advantage of their terrace, pool, and spa cafe.
Sensory Deprivation at Flo2s
Sensory deprivation takes some getting used to, but has shown to have benefits for health and mental wellness. FLO2S is located in an unassuming building in funky Little Five Points. Fearing claustrophobia, I went for the float room instead of the tank. It took around 30 minutes for my mind to turn off, but afterwards it was relaxing. I look forward to trying it again!
Nails at Sugarcoat
I actually have a favorite place down the street from my house, but I attended an event at this salon back in August and was very impressed. Sugarcoat has locations in Vinings as well as a few others around town. Their salons are chicly decorated and have a great selection of polish brands and colors. They also offer waxing and lash treatments.
