Reading
I’m almost done reading All Over the Place by Geraldine DeRuiter and have made it not quite halfway in World Travel by Anthony Bourdain.
I’m obsessed with this story on classical art on OnlyFans in the New York Times. Jodi of Legal Nomads shared this Bloomberg story about how the projected Van Gogh craze started. If you’re a Ted Lasso fan, don’t miss this Buzzfeed story on behind-the-scenes knowledge.
I, like so many others, am closely following the trainwreck fall of a Real Housewife in the New York Times. Speaking of scams, Refinery29 covered the scam of “millennial workplaces” with beer Fridays and ping pong tables. This ProPublica story about sexual assault at a conservative Christian university is a tough read.
It’s a bit of inside baseball, but this Poynter story is an interesting read about the difficulty freelancers face in writing longform and deep investigative stories.

Listening
When the Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos story first came out, I was traveling around South Africa. I listened to every episode of The Dropout. While I didn’t read John Carreyrou’s book, I have been listening to his follow up Bad Blood: The Final Chapter podcast, which focuses on what has happened since the initial investigation and the lead-up to the court proceedings.
Watching
On a recent flight, I watched UK Love Island, a guilty pleasure. I’ve also been rewatching Seinfeld, which has been interesting because there are a lot of elements I didn’t remember. I quickly tore through The Chair because Sandrah Oh can do no wrong.
I watched the Brittany Murphy documentary but don’t recommend it. There was no new information and a lot of airtime was given to random YouTube fan accounts. I’ve also enjoyed BBC’s Ghosts, not the new American version.
Loving
The biggest news for my hometown of Atlanta and most of the South is that the Braves are in the World Series for the first time since the late 90s. I’m not a massive sports fan but I can’t help but feel city pride. If you’re not following Blooper, the Braves mascot, on Twitter, you’re missing out!
Causes
Earlier this month, I lost my uncle Dan. My first memories of flying were in his small plane and it’s something that has stayed with me in my travels. We had a celebration of life at a restaurant overlooking one of Atlanta’s smaller airports, a fitting sendoff. So this month, I donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, a cause he cared about.
Working
I’m working up to a strong finish to this year with eight stories due before the end of the year! For Roadtrippers, I wrote about a spooky museum in Savannah. For 10Best, I wrote about a refugee-run food hall in Memphis.
My first story for Saving Places, run by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is about a Green Book-era Asheville motel recently reopened as a music rehearsal space. My story on micro hotels, with less than 20 rooms, ran in the latest issue of USA Today’s GoEscape magazine.
Coming up, I have a story about a South Carolina city known for its old-school restaurants, an incredible Savannah hotel, a North Carolina store-turned-museum, my favorite places in the Smokies, and a distillery owned by a former CIA operative.
I’m also planning on participating in Nanowrimo again this year, but we’ll see how it goes!

Traveling
I had a great time in Milwaukee at the SATW conference. Everyone was vaccinated and tested and masks were worn. I found the city so welcoming and easy to get around. I have a lot I want to say about it, but I’m still formulating what exactly I want to cover. It will probably mention how I drank so many brandy old fashioneds, a thing I didn’t know existed beforehand.
Not long after, I went on my first vacation in ages to Mobile and the Eastern Shore of Alabama. I had booked a trip to Bermuda that I ended up having to cancel because of flight changes and the mandatory quarantine after testing, even if you’re vaccinated. So instead I ate my weight in seafood and wandered around the stunning towns.
Next up, I’m taking a trip back up to North Carolina and then will visit a new-to-me city in the Midwest!
