Reading
I’ll admit that I’ve fallen behind in my reading and am still working through World Travel by Anthony Bourdain. I especially loved the Malaysia chapter, which reminded me of my own time there. I’m hoping to finish reading it before the end of the year!
This story for The New York Review was from April, but is still relevant about the human cost of the immigrants that work to produce our food, often in unsafe conditions. This story for the LA Times on Alice Sebold’s memoir Lucky and how it led to a wrongful conviction was sad for all parties. This story on The Atlantic against the next January 6 is terrifying.
To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).
Listening
The latest season of Slow Burn is focusing on the beating of Rodney King and the LA Riots, which I, admittedly, knew very little about. On a long drive, I also listened to the first episode of Once Upon a Time… at Bennington College which is about the years that three well-known authors attended a liberal arts college.
Watching
I finally started watching Succession after many people recommended it. I’m finally caught up and will admit that the third season is dragging a bit for me but the guest stars are excellent! I’m also watching the new season of The Great. It’s a bit more intense than the previous one, but that’s Russia for you.
I watched Party Down on a plane and quickly finished it and have now started It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I’ve also watched the second season of Tiger King, which I think is better than the first, and just started on the latest season of Pen15.
Loving
In 2022, Georgia will again be the quintessential battleground state. We are united, we are ready and we are proud to have you on our team. #gapol pic.twitter.com/oK8k0FncHL
— Stacey Abrams (@staceyabrams) December 4, 2021
I’m not sure if I’d say I’m loving it, but I’ve joined a gym near my house. I was an avid ClassPass member before the pandemic and loved trying different classes all over town. These days, it’s not quite as feasible, so I am paying for a basic membership.
So far, I’m enjoying it. I’m also back in therapy after a difficult few months. Doing it virtually has been an interesting adjustment.
In better news, I attended the surprise wedding of a family friend after she and her boyfriend had been dating for over 20 years! I got to be the photographer so it was fun to capture the excitement on everyone’s faces.
And I’m so happy to say that Stacey Abrams is running for governor of Georgia! After the past few years, especially the last election, it’s more important than ever to support voting rights. On a purely academic view, it’s going to be interesting to see Kemp run against Perdue.
Causes
I’m again donating to Hacienda Merida on Ometepe in Nicaragua, where I stayed in 2017. The hostel and school usually receive money from the travelers that stay there, but the pandemic has made this period difficult. It’s a really special place and I hope to return one day.
I’m also donating to Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the only abortion clinic in the state of Mississippi. It’s also part of the lawsuit currently at the desk of the Supreme Court, so it’s an important time to support financially.
Working
I didn’t get far in Nanowrimo this year, but it was a crazy time with unexpected travel and additional work. Maybe next year!
I’m immensely proud of my story for Saving Places, run by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, about a Green Book-era Asheville motel recently reopened as a music rehearsal space. For 10Best, I wrote about the abundance of drive-ins and diners in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
For InsideHook, I covered an incredible Savannah hotel that I stayed in this summer with a museum-quality collection of fossils and minerals as well as a CIA operative turned distillery owner in Milwaukee. For AAA, I covered my favorite cocktail bars, restaurants, and coffee shops in Columbus, Ohio. In my first for Conde Nast Traveler, live today, I talked about my favorite places in the Smokies.
Next up, I’m working on a story about a black-owned makers market in Kentucky, the experience of taking my grandmother to Disney World, and a guide to Tallahassee, Florida. And look out for stories soon on an artist space in North Carolina and a canoeing guide in the Mississippi Delta!

Traveling
I had to take a last-minute trip to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for a conference I’m planning. It was mostly work, but I fit in time to see a friend and some great meals. A few days later, I went on a long-overdue trip to Cleveland, Ohio for a few days of eating and exploring.
I also spent a few nights in a treehouse in Amish country, which I’ll write about soon! Next up, I’m taking my FINAL trip of the year to Hattiesburg, Mississippi!
