It’s a new year! December was one of those months with equal highs and lows, with happy gatherings (like my tropical Christmas party) and family tensions. But this time of year is for starting over, right? I’m hopeful about goals for the future.
In every monthly post, I like to share the articles I’m reading, the shows I’m watching, and the podcasts I’m listening to. They’ll remain free to read but there will continue to be affiliate links to recommended products to support site upkeep.
If you’re looking for a way to support my work, buy my book, read my articles, or sign up for my courses. Thanks again for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!

Reading
I’ve been trying to finish my Goodreads Challenge for the year, so I’ve been tearing through shorter books. I finished Team Rodent, The Glass Menagerie, and Anthem. I’m still working on A Separate Peace and all of the other books on my shelf that have never been opened.
I’m also enjoying all the articles on the internet including this wild tale of a Michelin starred restaurant in Italy on The Everywherist, the fight between protected Georgia lands and the space race on Audubon, and my friend Lia’s story on buying yourself gifts for the New York Times.
The Atlantic is covering the “bog people.” AV Club talked about angel Jimmy Carter and his past saving us from nuclear apocalypse. The New York Times discussed Utah’s rise of soda chains. Vox wrote about the child of a white supremacist and The Nation covered the history of the Sons of the Confederacy and their alt-right leanings.
To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).
Listening
Nothing new! Leave me your suggestions!
Watching
I’m a bit overwhelmed with all of the viewing options right now. I started And Just Like That and my feelings are… mixed. So far, I don’t think it added anything to the original story. I’ve also really enjoyed The Sex Lives of College Girls. I went to my first movie in nearly a year, Spiderman, and thought it was funny. I’m not a massive Marvel fan, so it was nice to bring in some of the previous incarnations that I saw growing up.
Loving
That feeling when your friend cuts out a picture of your dog from your Christmas card to hang on their fridge 🤣🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/B4qf6tVYQP
— Caroline Eubanks (@cairinthecity) December 8, 2021
I got some lovely things for Christmas, including a glass from Pretentious Glass (who I wrote about last year) and a print from Chambers Austelle. I got a new coffee grinder to up my coffee snob game and a little bobblehead puppy for my desk.
I just had to share this tweet about a friend that cut out a picture of my dog from my Christmas card to hang on the fridge. I also found a Disney ticket from 1982 at my grandmother’s house THAT STILL WORKS! And I love getting rid of terrible statues like this one in Nashville of Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first grand wizard of the KKK.
Causes
I know it seems like we just got through election season, but midterms are coming soon. It’s a good time to support organizations like Fair Fight that protect voting rights.
Working
For Southern Living, I wrote about a black-owned makers market in Kentucky. For Garden & Gun, I wrote about the Christmas history of the Roanoke Star. For InsideHook, I wrote about a real-life Huck Finn in the Mississippi Delta.
For Conde Nast Traveler, I wrote about what it was like to take my grandmother to Disney World. For Simply Buckhead, I wrote a guide to Tallahassee, Florida. For Roadtrippers, I wrote about an artist space in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Next up, I’m working on a story about Savannah‘s women-owned businesses, the Disney town of Celebration, and a road trip on Alabama‘s Eastern Shore.
Traveling
I’m gearing up for a very big travel year, starting with a return to St. Augustine, a place I haven’t been since 2013! I’m excited to see what’s new in the historic city. A few weeks later, I’ll be in New York for a few days to attend a travel industry conference. In February, I’ll be road tripping to Virginia!
