After a fast-paced early few months of the year, I’m in a slump. I went out of town for a week and am trying to get my head on straight again, which is easier said than done. But I’m hopeful for a calmer spring.
In every monthly post, I like to share the articles I’m reading, the shows I’m watching, and the podcasts I’m listening to. They’ll remain free to read but there will continue to be affiliate links to recommended products to support site upkeep.
If you’re looking for a way to support my work, buy my book, read my articles, or sign up for my courses. Thanks again for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!
Reading
This month, I finished reading Cultish, which I felt lived up to the hype. I think the misconception is that it’s a book about cults, but it’s really about how words can have such an impact on people through cults and cult-like businesses.
Now I’ve moved onto Big Friendship, which I won a copy of from Goodreads. It’s about two friends, who have a podcast together, and what they’ve learned about how to keep female friendships.
I loved reading friends’ recent stories in Afar, including the hiking trails in Tahiti and Asheville’s historically Black neighborhood revival. A Chitlin Circuit landmark in coastal Mississippi was profiled in Roadtrippers. This Outside story about the struggles of a volcano hike in Guatemala was eerily similar to my own experiences.

Listening
Because of the long drives in the last month, I’ve had plenty of time for podcast listening. In addition to my regular lineup, I have been really into Texas Monthly’s podcasts, including America’s Girls, about the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, and Tom Brown’s Body, a story about a small town and a missing teenager.
Watching
After finishing It’s Always Sunny, I’ve been looking for a comedy to fill that void. A recent addition is Mythic Quest on Apple+, which is by the same creators and is centered about a video design company. The second season of Dollface was a quick watch for me as well. I started Letterkenny, a dry comedy series from Canada.
I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about Pam and Tommy, but I’m actually enjoying it. I think that Lily James and Sebastian Stan really captured the characters. As someone who lived through this period of pop culture, I’m starting to see the treatment of Pamela Anderson very differently. I also didn’t know that the tape had been stolen. I also like that it is based on a Rolling Stone article. The nostalgia-filled music is also incredible, available on this Spotify playlist.
I’ve just started another serie based on an article, Inventing Anna. Next on the list is the newest season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the final season of Killing Eve, whic I think is one of the best shows in years.
Loving
This has been quite a social few weeks. In the past week alone, I went to the High Museum here in Atlanta to see the Obama portraits (amazing!), went to a James Beard Foundation dinner with my friend Lia (incredible!), and hosted a Peaky Blinders themed party where everyone dressed the part (fantastic!).
Causes
I’ve been horrified to watch what’s going on in Ukraine so I’m donating this month to the Ukranian Red Cross. I hope you’ll do the same.
Working
I worked on this story about the best restaurants in Oxford, Mississippi way back in 2019 and I’m glad it finally ran for 10Best. My Southern Living story on a Black-owned maker market in Louisville, Kentucky.
Now I’m working on stories about Milwaukee‘s former brewery-owned pubs, a pint-sized museum in Hattiesburg, an eco-friendly tour company in Key West, and home decor and product designers that are doing their own photography at home.

Traveling
I went on a week-long trip to Raleigh, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chapel Hill. I got a lot of good story ideas, but I was exhausted from the journey. There were also some issues with one of the hotels that colored the experience. One silver lining was a day in Virginia Beach’s ViBe District, full of cute coffee shops, stores, restaurants, and murals.
