In every monthly post, I like to share the articles I’m reading, the shows I’m watching, and the podcasts I’m listening to. They’ll remain free to read but there will continue to be affiliate links to recommended products to support site upkeep.

Reading
I finished reading Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman and based on the commentary when it was released, I enjoyed it more than I thought. I’ve followed it up with Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing, a book written by a gay woman who grew up in a cult and later the military.
After hearing about the TikTok dancers and an alleged cult, I really enjoyed this story on The Cut. And having grown up in the church, this article on rise of religious right for Politico was fascinating and terrifying at the same time.
To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).
Listening
A lifelong gossip hound, I finally started listening to Beyond the Blinds. And in a completely different niche, Sympathy Pains tells of a woman who consistently faked cancer, pregnancy, and tragedies to get attention. It’s a short season, so you can easily listen in a day.
Watching
I tore through the first season of Russian Doll and am enjoying the second. The same goes for Bridgerton, which I recently finished. I’m only one episode into the second season of The Flight Attendant, which I’ll admit is going a bit slower. And the final two episodes of The Way Down were released, which fulfilled my cult fascination.
Loving
I’m really trying to maximize my weekends in some sort of work/life balance. In the past few weeks, I’ve attended a friend’s wedding and had friends and family over for my sister’s birthday. I worked on a puzzle to stave off the Sunday scaries. I’m also going back and updating old posts on this site, some well over a decade ago, so it’s been fun to relive my Australia and Charleston years, sometimes cringing at what I wrote.
Causes
I am one of many people that is horrified to hear about the Supreme Court leak and the plans to overturn Roe vs. Wade. I’ve always taken for granted that if I needed this healthcare, I could find it. Because that’s what it is.
I can’t even imagine the fear of the many people that will be affected, especially those in BIPOC and immigrant communities. Someone you know has certainly had an abortion, so I encourage you to handle your loved ones with care during this time.
There is a lot of commentary about where to donate. This Google Doc from @helmsinki on Twitter is helpful. I’m giving to ARC Southeast.
Working
I wrote the first in a series on North Carolina for Lonely Planet about the best places to visit around the state. For my first for Thrillist in many years, I wrote an Earth Day feature about how to take part in ocean conservation in your travels.
I also profiled a lionfish hunter in Florida for InsideHook. In the latest issue of Fifty Grande, I wrote about the foodways of Mississippi gas stations. Order your copy here!
Coming up, I’m excited to share stories on a pint-sized museum in Hattiesburg, the charming towns of Ohio‘s Amish Country, an artsy neighborhood in Virginia Beach, the best Georgia parks, saving roadside landmarks, and a Florida resort community.

Traveling
I spent a brief weekend in Vicksburg, a town in the Mississippi Delta I’d briefly passed through years prior, and had a lovely time. From there, I came home for a few days before leaving for Charleston. I was there for four days and didn’t once go downtown, instead staying on the barrier islands. I did, however, spot Outer Banks being filmed!
Next week, I’m excited to go on a return trip to San Antonio. June will have me going back to Orlando and Winston-Salem!
