I drafted this post for April but clearly never hit publish. I’ve had a lot going on and I’ll admit that my mental health hasn’t been at its best. My doctor left the practice and I was unable to get my prescription refilled, causing me to spiral until I was able to get what I needed. But hoping I’m back on track!
In every monthly post, I like to share the articles I’m reading, the shows I’m watching, and the podcasts I’m listening to. They’ll remain free to read but there will continue to be affiliate links to recommended products to support site upkeep.
If you’re looking for a way to support my work, buy my book, read my articles, or sign up for my courses. Thanks again for following along! Be sure to share what you’re loving this month below!
This post contains affiliate links that can earn this website a small income. They will not cost you anything to use.
Reading
I’m in a book rut because I have no attention span at the moment! If you have audiobooks, please recommend them!
To see what else I’m reading, check out my Goodreads Profile here (which is also my author page!).
Listening
I’m between podcasts but am finding the new season of Slow Burn to be interesting!
Watching
I’m getting into all the documentaries at the moment, including the coverage of The Duggars and Hillsong. I got one episode into the Natalia show and had to take a step back. I, of course, finished Succession and the latest season of Yellowjackets. I’ve also finally gotten into Shameless.
Loving
I don’t know what took me so long, but I finally got a robot vacuum, which has helped with the abundant dog hair in my house. My sister and I have also been running a side hustle selling antiques and knickknacks online. We had our first in-person market, which was a big success! Check out our Etsy store, Poore House Vintage.
Working
For InsideHook, I wrote about sailing the British Virgin Islands, the best foodie stops along the Virginia Creeper Trail, how to rent celeb homes in Palm Springs, and the charming town of Wytheville. I wrote about Knoxville and Maryville’s best eats for Bon Appetit and an underrated road trip route for Conde Nast Traveler‘s Roadside Americana package.
For Southern Living, I wrote about Georgia’s own Cafe Campesino and how a community restaurant recovered from a tornado. For Apartment Therapy, I wrote about what it’s like to live across the street from my grandmother. I also wrote about learning to sail for the Toronto Star, which came out in print, along with my first for Garden & Gun print about a theater anniversary in Virginia.
Up next, I’m excited to share a profile on a family farm turned distillery in Arkansas, a Christmas tree that is becoming musical instruments in North Carolina, a creative neighborhood in Cleveland, and a guide to the best things to do in Savannah.

Traveling
My travel schedule has been crazy since my last post. I ran a conference in charming Vermont and turned it into a solo road trip. I went to an area outside of Charlotte for a night for story research and twice went to Kentucky, first to Lexington for a distillery visit and then to the small towns of coal country.
I attended a meeting in Huntsville, where I got to do some antiquing and drinking, and then to the North Carolina coast. I spent a few nights in Corinth, Mississippi for a story and have been taking some much-needed time at home before starting next month’s travels.
Next up is a trip to Tennessee followed by some time in California wine country.
