Volunteer travel is a great way to give back while seeing the world, assuming you go with a reputable organization. But packing can be intimidating. Some programs give you a recommended packing list, but not all. I’ve now volunteered twice in Thailand, including once at the Elephant Nature Park, and also on projects in the Dominican Republic.
So no matter whether you’re going on a two-year commitment with the Peace Corps or a week long mission trip, I’m offering advice on packing for volunteer trips.

What is the purpose of your trip?
Obviously you’re there to volunteer, but what type of volunteering? Is it a mission trip where you’ll need to dress conservatively? Are you working with children or outdoors? Will you be near stores if you need to bring something you forgot? Also consider how much free time you’ll have, which might determine what clothing and accessories you bring.
How long are you traveling for?
If you’re only traveling for a week or so, I wouldn’t spend much money on clothing for volunteering. In my experience, these clothing items will get fully trashed on certain trips. For my past volunteer trips, I mostly wore old t-shirts and leggings and threw some away afterward. I never could get the stain from the banana trees we cut out of one of my shirts, even after multiple washes, so I ended up donating it.
Also, keep in mind that you can purchase more items if you need them when you arrive at your destinations. Shop at local markets for replacement items, which will also help you blend in. If you don’t have any clothes at home that you’re prepared to part with, head to your local thrift store to pick up essentials. Then you can donate again afterward.
