After a few days in the big city, I rented a car and drove south to Glenmont, Ohio, located between Cleveland and Columbus in Amish Country. I’d heard great things about The Mohicans, a treehouse resort and wedding venue featured on Treehouse Masters. It seemed like a nice way to disconnect for a few days before heading back to deadlines at home.
The family-owned and operated resort sits on over 70 acres of wilderness and has four cabins and nine treehouses. Each comes equipped with full-sized beds, bathrooms, kitchenettes, and televisions. But when staying here, it’s all about soaking in your surroundings.
I stayed at The View, the newest treehouse that opened in fall 2020. The resort is located down an unpaved road so I am glad I got there in the daylight. I was given directions before arrival that helped immensely, as cell service is spotty at best.
The folks at The Mohicans had stocked my treehouse with everything I could possibly need, including wine and snacks. The kitchenette has a cooktop, microwave oven, cookware, dishes, and utensils for preparing a simple meal. I did set the fire alarm off with every meal, so you might want to cook with the door open. There’s also a fire pit if you want to grill and a swing underneath the house.
Before you go, pick up the essentials from the IGA in Loudonville. Or you can order meals from Treehouse Provisions, a ghost kitchen with chef-prepared meals. I didn’t bring much, just comfy clothes, books, and DVDs. I brought my favorites, including Empire Records and Almost Famous.
But I don’t recommend bringing scary movies because it’s eerily quiet out there! It’s definitely an interesting experience as a solo traveler, but I had a lovely time admiring the fall leaves and unplugging.
Where to Eat Nearby
Loudonville
Loudonville is the closet town to The Mohicans, at around 15 minutes away. Before arriving at my treehouse, I had a lovely lunch at Black Fork Bistro. The turkey bacon sandwich was delightful but they also have burgers and pizzas. Other restaurant options include Trails End Restaurant and the many Amish bakeries nearby.
Wooster
The Mohicans team recommended Broken Rocks Cafe as one of their favorite places in the area. I visited in the late afternoon and it was still crowded. The menu had a great selection and I kept it simple with a hearty bowl of tomato soup.
The college town around 40 minutes away has plenty of great restaurants within walking distance. Sure House Coffee Roasting Co. is a nearby coffee shop with baked goods.
What to See Nearby
Glenmont
If you’re visiting The Mohicans during the spring or summer, there are countless experiences nearby, including seasonal canopy tours, canoeing, horseback riding, and hiking. Most are right down the street from the resort! Options are fewer during the winter. Mohican State Park is only five miles away with over 1,000 acres of trails and waterfalls, not to mention the iconic covered bridge.
Mansfield
On my way to the resort, I stopped by Ohio State Reformatory, which was one of the filming locations for The Shawshank Redemption. In fact, there’s an entire film trail in this area devoted to the movie. It was closed during my visit, but the decommissioned facility offers guided tours throughout the year. A museum inside has props from the film. They also offer paranormal tours.
Lucas
Malabar Farm State Park is around 30 minutes away and is a stunning 900 acre home-turned-park. The estate belonged to author Louis Bromfield. It was also where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married. Pugh Cabin, on the property, was also used in the film in the opening scene. There’s also an onsite restaurant.
Wooster
Wooster was a total surprise for me. I spent an entire day wandering around, driving through the campus, which has its own art museum, and browsing the shops. Some of my favorites were Books In Stock Used & Rare Books, Operation Fandom, and Blue Spruce Boutique. Blackbird Records was closed, but it looked lovely.
